Dual Fuel Heating System Rebate – Electric Heat Pump Combined With Gas Furnace

Our dual fuel heating system rebate helps reduce the cost of installing a new electric heat pump alongside a high-efficiency gas furnace. With a qualifying dual fuel system, you’ll enjoy reliable and efficient heating to keep your home warm during the coldest days, cooling for hot summer months, and a system that can exceed 100% efficiency under specific conditions.

This rebate is available for customers looking to replace an aging gas furnace with a high-efficiency heating and cooling solution, offering the benefits of reduced energy use and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

 

Program eligibility

  1. The home must have a residential FortisBC natural gas or propane account.2
  2. If the registered owner of the property where upgrades were made is not the utility account holder (e.g. landlord/tenant) the owner must have the account holder complete the Utility Account Holder Consent form.
  3. The home must be a year-round primary residence at least 12 months old and be either a single-family, duplex, triplex, row home, townhouse or mobile home on a permanent foundation. New construction, additions and garage upgrades are not eligible.
  4. Applications must be submitted within six months of the paid invoice date.
  5. Rebates cannot exceed the paid cost on the invoice.

  1. Invoices must be dated on or after July 1, 2024.
  2. It must be replacing an existing gas furnace that serves as the primary3 space heating system for the home, and is at least 10 years old. Replacement of existing dual fuel system is not eligible.
  3. It must be a new central ducted air source heat pump integrated with a new compatible high-efficiency gas furnace.
  4. It must be installed by a Technical Safety BC licensed gas contractor who is a member in good standing of the Home Performance Contractor Network.
  5. The heat pump must be listed as an eligible system on the rebate eligible product list. Qualifying systems must have an AHRI certified reference number that references the outdoor unit and the indoor unit(s) of the heat pump, and the furnace model number.
  6. It must have the thermostat, outdoor temperature switch-over control or equipment control board set to the following region-specific temperatures for the duration of the product lifetime:
    • Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island regions: 5 °C or lower
    • Southern Interior and northern B.C. regions: 2 °C or lower
  7. It must undergo commissioning to ensure the system is installed and operating according to best practice.
  8. It must be sized to ensure the heat pump component has the capacity to meet the home’s heat demand at or below the region-specific outdoor set-point (e.g. the application balance point must be lower than the region-specific outdoor thermostat set-point), and must be sized to function as the primary heating system of the home, serving the main living area (e.g. family room, living room, or open-concept kitchen-livingroom).
  9. A program-approved heat load calculation is required to properly size the system. Rule of thumb equipment sizing will not be accepted.
  10. It must be installed in accordance with the Heat Pump Best Practices Installation Guide for Existing Homes and the High-Efficiency Furnace Installation Guide for Existing Houses.
  11. The connected thermostat must be installed by a licensed contractor at the same time as the new eligible dual fuel system.
  12. Warranty replacements and insurance claims are not eligible.

How to apply

  1. Purchase an eligible air source heat pump and high-efficiency gas furnace and have them installed by a Technical Safety BC licensed contractor who is a member in good standing of the Home Performance Contractor Network.
  2. Complete the application form in full and submit it within six months of the invoice date along with the following information:
    • your FortisBC gas account number
    • your email
    • a scanned copy of your paid invoice (see a sample invoice)
    • copy of the heat load calculation and the commissioning sheet (provided by your contractor)
    • photos of the two-pipe direct vent system (upon request)

Note: applications may take up to 90 days to process.

 

How to get your Notice of Assessment

  • The NOA is the document Canada Revenue Agency sends you after filing your tax return. If you have your most current NOA, send us a copy with your application.
  • If you do not have your NOA, use Canada Revenue Agency’s My Account service to view and print a copy of your information.
  • You can also call them to request your NOA at 1-800-959-8281. Agents are available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
